Matt Baldwin – Passing Through

Event host & organizer as well as author of a Leonard Cohen biography, Sylvie Simmons, introduces solo guitarist Matt Baldwin who performs a classic progressive folk tune from the late 40’s. apparently “PASSING THROUGH” is the only published tune by a Chicago folk musician named Richard (Dick) Cleveland Blakeslee. Inspired to send it to the People’s Songs organization in New York, his home-cut acetate disc arrived at the offices of the loose knit non-profit predecessor to “Sing-Out’ whose members included Mo Asch, Anges “Sis” Cunningham, Tom Glazer, Woody Guthrie, Lee Hays. They regularly published a newsletter to share new folk songs for the progressive labor movement to shareand in turn, the tune was soon introduced via the newsletter to sympathetic subscribers around the same time as We Shall Overcome. Blakeslee’s song was recorded and popularized by Pete Seeger, and sung by him regularly throughout the  1948 Presidential election campaign when Seeger was backing Progressive Party candidate Henry Wallace. Other renditions of the song have been recorded by The HighwaymenCisco HoustonEarl Scruggs, & on a 1970 live album by Leonard Cohen.

I saw jesus on the cross on a hill called calvary
“do you hate mankind for what they done to you? “
He said, “talk of love not hate, things to do – it’s getting late.
I’ve so little time and I’m only passing through.”Passing through, passing through.

Sometimes happy, sometimes blue,
Glad that I ran into you.
Tell the people that you saw me passing through.

I saw adam leave the garden with an apple in his hand,
I said “now you’re out, what are you going to do? “
“plant some crops and pray for rain, maybe raise a little cane.
I’m an orphan now, and I’m only passing through.”Passing through, passing through

…I was with Washington at valley ford, shivering in the snow.

I said, “how come the men here suffer like they do? “
“men will suffer, men will fight, even die for what is right
Even though they know they’re only passing through”Passing through, passing through

…I was with Franklin Roosevelt’s side on the night before he died.
He said, “one world must come out of world war two” (ah, the fool)
“yankee, russian, white or tan, ” he said, “a man is still a man.

We’re all on one road, and we’re only passing through.”Passing through, passing through …Passing through, passing through …

-Dick Blakeslee

Teenage Bottlerocket “Stay Rad!” Record Release Party – Little Kid (acoustic version)

Teenage Bottlerocket “Stay Rad!” Record Release Party live acoustic set at Fat Wreck Chords HQ in San Francisco

Ray Rocket , in from Wyoming, and on his way to Disneyland with his son, stops by Fat Wreck Chords HQ to sing” Little Kid”. The occasion as to celebrate the release of the new Teenage Bottlerocket album Stay Rad! . This album marks the return of the band to the label after a brief hiatus, and is the band’s eighth full length LP in all. “Stay Rad!” also is the first new album since of original material since the sadly sobering drug related death of drummer Brandon, Ray’s twin brother, back in 2015.

Teenage Bottlerocket are no longer teenagers, and in fact are proudly punk rock “dad rock”. Stay Rad! closes out with the track featured here “Little Kid.” A somewhat somber song, that explores the minefields of memory, reflective no doubt on the loss of Ray’s brother and the changes that fatherhood has brought. When Ray Rocket achingly yodels “I can’t figure out how to be a little kid again,” it’s impossible not to feel tinges of his grief, if not some sadness of our own childhood’s being gone for good as well.

Monks Of Doom – Oh Well

Veteran touring rockers David Immergluck, Victor Krummenacher, Greg Lisher, Chris Pedersen of the Camper Van Crows hit the road once again as the Monks Of Doom in 2018 and I was lucky enough to catch their rare San Francisco matinee show at The Make-Out Room in the Mission District. They played a lengthy set of faves old and new and slipped in an off the cuff mid-set cover of Fleetwood Mac’s rockinest tune of all time “Oh Well”

The 78 RPMs from their album Pulsator

When it comes to extinct Bay Area bands, we will stop at nothing in our quest to unearth the finest of the trash rock greats…

One such bands that never failed to impress was the frenetic 78 RPMs who released two albums and several singles, mostly on their own Dill Records label…this track is from their final full length offering “Pulsator” via the Shrunken Head label

78 RPM’s were the late great Lynette Knackstedt on bass, Lars Nylander on keys (both formerly of Skankin Pickle); with Brent Wilson of the Rudiments/ Impalers on guitar, and the mysterious Gary on drums

In this video cobbled together at the turn of the century by the DBL VZN crew ( basically me and “Fatty” Jeff McColgan) that we shot on two $900 digital video cameras at The SF Eagle, Galia & Kimo’s circa 2001 …and then edited on a trusty new $4000 PC in a Mission District flat whose rooms rented for $260. Nowadays the gear could be had for less than $500 but the rent would be $4000 a month …go figger
