Cyrano de Bergerac is a character in a play written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand, here he is as Cyrano de Berger is a lovelorn stalker, a feral figment of writer John Doe’s fertile imagination, as sung by Flesh Eaters frontman and punk poet Chris D live at a reunion show in San Francisco.
Originally featured on their album, “A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die” it is also a staple of set lists by both X and The Flesh Eaters if you go see either band on tour. The Flesh Eaters are currently signed to Yep Roc and promoting their first ever followup album with the original 1981 lineup.
Backed by by his pedigreed punk sewer group featuring John Doe on bass and DJ Bonebrake of X on xylophone , Bill Bateman and Dave Alvin of The Blasters, as well as Plugz/Los Lobos’ saxman Steve Berlin, Chris D has a noteweorthy gang of seasoned compatriots.
I got a couple of words to sayFor all strong and silent typesWho don’t talk to the girls they wanna loveThough it means their lives, I say this, “It’s time to get stark”Yet the words don’t comeYour eyes are blue as the coals that burnIn your black desire I’ll talk for youUnder the balcony in blueI’ll talk for you, I’ll talk for youFor Cyrano de Bergers’ Back
I’ll have sympathetic yearsTo hear what your Roxanne will sayThough I love her 20 times moreI never say I should be the erosionOf color on your cheekInstead I make your man a girlIn between your sheets
I’ll talk for youTen hearts are beating trueThis ain’t a lie, this ain’t behindCyrano de Berger’s Back
I got a couple of words to sayFor all you strong and silent typesWho don’t talk to the girls they wanna loveThough it means their life
I should be the erosionOf color on your cheekInstead I’ll make your man a girlIn between your sheets
I’ve got ten arms for youTen hearts are beating trueThis ain’t a lie
